Young ferns

Close-up of two green fern fronds with delicate leaflets, set against a blurred forest background.

The eagle fern (Pteridium aquilinum) is the most abundant fern species in its environment. It forms imposing stands in the Pays Basque, Cantal, Brittany, Fontainebleau, etc.

Fern is dependent on acid soils and good rainfall, so it is truly a bio-indicator of the acid forests appearing geologically linked in our region with the “Limon des plateaux” or the Fontainebleau sand.
