A bird stands on mangrove roots near dark water, surrounded by dense vegetation and contrasting light and shadow.

The Blue Egret mainly frequents shallow inland wetlands: marshes, ponds, lakes, flooded meadows and rice paddies. But it can also be found in brackish or salty environments such as mangroves and sheltered mudflats along the coast.

The Blue Egret feeds mainly on aquatic arthropods, particularly crabs, which abound in the mangroves.
